D'Arcy Philip Gray works with a variety of styles of music. His professional interests range from classical performance to electronic composition and circuit design. He performs regular solo and chamber music concerts in various parts of Canada and has been teaching percussion since 1991 at McGill University. From 1993 to 1995 Gray performed regularly with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and, since 1996 , he has performed with numerous Montreal-area orchestras. He is part of a team that is documenting the music of David Tudor for performance and exhibition and is also a clinician for Yamaha Canada Music and an endorser of Sabian Ltd. His collection of keyboard percussion studies, "7 Operations for Marimba", is being published by Honeyrock. Excerpts from Gray's electronic composition "theReason" can be found on a recently released CD: The Frog Peak Collaborations Project. D'Arcy Philip Gray's is a graduate of the Juilliard School('92) and McGill University ('91). He has received study and travel grants from the Getty Research Institute, the Canada Council, the Conseil des Arts du Quebec, and the Nova Scotia Talent Trust Fund. In 1995 he studied electronic music and performance practice with David Tudor in New York. His work has been described by Percussive Notes magazine as "brilliant" and by the Halifax Chronicle Herald as "impressively precise".

D'Arcy Philip Gray divise son temps entre l'enseignment des percussions à l'Université McGill et d'interprèté les percussions et les instruments électroniques avec "Motion" à Fredericton, "KORE" à Montréal, et "Composers Inside Electronics" à New York. Il était musicien avec le "Merce Cunningham Dance Company" à New York de 1993 à 1995. Depuis 1996 il a joué avec plusiers orchestres à Montréal. Maintenant, il est actif à titre de codirecteur de l'ensemble Motion ou il a enregistré les disques de la musique de John Cage et de Veronika Krausas. D'Arcy Philip Gray a étudié à l'Université McGill et à Juilliard. Il a reçu des subventions de "Getty Research Institute", "Nova Scotia Talent Trust Fund" et du Conseil des Arts du Canada. Howard Engstrom’s music education began on piano at age 8 and continued on trumpet two years later. His early teachers were Bob Wilson, Gene Laughton and Bert Roth. In 1962, at age 14, he began studying with James Austin, Principal Trumpet of the Houston Symphony; a rewarding and joyful collaboration that was to continue for the next nine years.

After graduation (with honors) in 1970, Howard continued playing with the Houston Symphony and freelancing in the area. Teaching extensively, he was asked to be the first trumpet instructor at Rice University. His career in Houston continued until 1972 when he was asked to become the Principal Trumpet of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

Three decades later, Howard’s career as a performer and educator continues with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, The University of Calgary and Mount Royal College Conservatory. He has been a soloist with his orchestra on several occasions and his students are enjoying uniform success as players and teachers. Invitations to teach, perform and conduct master classes have taken him across Canada as well as to Houston, Chicago, and Hungary.

Diplômé avec «Honors» en 1970, Howard continua pendant quelque temps de jouer avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Houston et comme pigiste dans la région. Enseignant prolifique, il fut le premier professeur de trompette à l’Université Rice. Il devait interrompre sa carière à Houston en 1972 pour devenir trompette-solo à l’Orchestre philharmonique de Calgary.

Trente ans plus tard, Howard poursuit toujours une carrière d’instrumentiste et d’éducateur à l’Orchestre philharmonique de Calgary, l’Université de Calgary et le Conservatoire du Mount Royal College. Il a été soliste avec cet orchestre à plusieurs occasions et ses élèves jouissent également d’un grand succès comme instrumentistes et enseignants. Des invitations à se produire en concert, à enseigner et diriger des classes de maître l’ont mené à travers le Canada, à Houston et Chicago, de même qu’en Hongrie.

We are pleased to welcome back Julia Nolan as the Yamaha Canada Music featured soloist for 2005. Julia Nolan is a busy soloist and chamber musician in a wide variety of genres.  On March 20, 2005 she will perform the premiere of Ian McDougall’s Concerto, a CBC commissioned work for Julia Nolan, with the CBC Vancouver Orchestra.  She has been asked to perform this work with the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra in their 2005-6 season.  In addition Ms. Nolan will be the featured soloist with the National Youth Band of Canada in May 2005.  Ms. Nolan performed as soloist with the festival orchestra at the World Saxophone Conference in Minnesota in July of 2003. She is featured as soloist on the CBC Vancouver Orchestra cd Globetrotting and has recorded Concerto by Fred Stride commissioned for her by the CBC.  She has been featured with the CBC Jazz Orchestra playing Jimmy Dorsey’s Oodles of Noodles.  As well Ms. Nolan was one of the orchestral soloists featured in the CBC film production of The Overcoat.  She has also performed with the Alan Matheson Big Band (featured on their newly released cd Intrada), the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver New Music Society, the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, Saxophilia Saxophone Quartet and Saxoduo with her husband David Branter.  Julia Nolan career achievements were profiled in the Sept/Oct. 2001 issue of The Saxophone Journal.

Julia Nolan teaches saxophone at the University of British Columbia and at Western Washington University and is an artist-clinician for Yamaha Canada, Ltd.

Over three decades and on five continents, Lenny Solomon, Bowfire’s founder and Artistic Director, has built a strong reputation as one of the world’s most skilled and innovative jazz violinists. Hailed as a “pleasure to discover” by LA Jazz Scene, his performances are “packed full of swing, polish and enthusiasm.” His two solo CD releases, After You’ve Gone and The Gershwin Sessions, have received critical acclaim, one reviewer dubbing him “the heir apparent to Joe Venuti.” He has toured extensively in the United States, Canada and Japan with The Lenny Solomon Trio and was a three-time winner of the annual Violinist Of The Year award presented by the national jazz magazine The Jazz Report. He has appeared as featured guest soloist with the Toronto and Winnipeg Symphonies, as well as with many other prestigious orchestras.

As a member of the pop duo Myles And Lenny in the 1970s, he recorded two albums for Columbia Records, toured widely, and won a Juno Award (Canada’s Grammy). Lenny went on to found the pop string quintet, Quintessence, and established himself as a versatile studio musician, performing on hundreds of recordings, films, television programs, and commercials. Lenny currently tours with the innovative ensemble The Galaxy Trio, joined by classical violinist Moshe Hammer and jazz pianist Bernie Senensky. Their self-titled CD has been widely praised and the group continues to receive rave reviews and command sellouts.

Pendant plus de trente ans sur cinq continents, Lenny Solomon, fondateur et directeur musical de Bowfire, s’est bâti une solide réputation comme l’un des violonistes de jazz les plus habiles et les plus novateurs. Combining immense talent with great flair and humour, the performances of Alain Trudel leave audiences filled with awe. An evangelist for the cause of the trombone, Trudel, born in 1966, is among the very few trombonists pursuing a brilliant career as an international soloist.

Trudel's performances as a soloist include engagements with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa), the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Austrian Radio Orchestra, the Tivoli Festival Orchestra (Copenhague). He also performed at the Musica Festival in Strasbourg (France), the Ijsbreker (Amsterdam), at the Carnegie-Weill Recital Hall (New York), the Music Gallery (Toronto), the Dresden Neue Musik Tage (Allemagne), at The Barge (New York) and at the Akioshidai Festival (Japon).

A charming and devoted personality, Alain Trudel is often asked to appear on national and foreign broadcasting networks–the CBC (Canada), Radio-France, ABC (Australia), and ÖRF (Austria). A portrait of Trudel has been prepared for television broadcast entitled The Mission of Alain Trudel; and his participation put in nomination for a Prix Gemeaux 1998. Alain Trudel has recorded two classical CD's on the Naxos label. The first features concerti for alto trombone by Leopold Mozart, Michael Haydn, Wagenseil and Albrechtsberger, with England's Northern Sinfonia under the soloist's direction, and has recieved critical acclaim: 5 Diapasons, Disk of the week (Voir) and 5 Stars from BBC Magazine.

Alain Trudel is the first brass player ever to win a number of major prizes: first prize in the Montreal Symphony Orchestra soloist competition, first prize in the Canadian International Stepping Stone Competition, the Mildred Dixon-Holmes Artist of the Year Award, and the Virginia Parker Prize (1996). He now performs, on average, one hundred concerts per year.

Doué d'un talent exceptionnel, d'un instinct sûr et d'une grande vivacité d'esprit, ses performances laissent son auditoire bouche bée. Propagandiste du trombone, né en 1966, il est un des rares tromboniste-soliste réussissant à poursuivre une carrière internationale.

John Griffiths is one of Canada’s leading brass soloists. His solo artistry has been heard in major halls all over the world including Italy, Russia, Finland and Japan and in many major North American universities (Eastman, Michigan, Indiana, Arizona State…). A recent 13,000 k U.S. tour included 30 major universities in the US. John was a guest artist with the United States Army Band (“Pershing’s Own”) in Washington D.C. where he premiered a new concerto with the band. His performances receive rave reviews and spontaneous standing ovations wherever he plays not only for his amazing pyrotechnic quality, sound and musicality but for his abilities as an entertainer as well.

From the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada, John is also principal tuba (and first call bass trombonist...) of the Regina Symphony.

John has performed at hundreds of recitals and performed with both band and orchestra and is internationally renowned for his sound, range and musicality. He has had nine major works written for his playing and recorded a first CD entitled “Canadian Chops” as well as written the popular text, “The Low Brass Guide”. John recorded his second solo CD (“The Legend of Heimdall”) with the Orchestra of the Capella of St. Petersburg (Russia) in 2000. Both CD’s have had rave reviews.

As an artist/clinician for Yamaha Canada, John plays three YAMAHA tubas: YFB 621S (F), YCB 621 (3/4 size CC) and YCB 661 (large CC) and a Yamaha 613H bass trombone. He lives in Regina with his wife, Nadine, daughter Kelly and son, Ryan.

John Griffiths est un des principaux solistes de cuivre au Canada. Daniel Doyon is a Canadian trumpet and cornet soloist and chamber player, founder and director of the Montreal Brass Ensemble and founding member of the Japan Gabrieli Brass Quartet. As a concert soloist, he has played with many ensembles, orchestras and bands in Japan, as well as with the Slovak Phil Chamber Orchestra, the orchestra and band of the Paris Garde Republicaine, the Atlantic Fleet Band of Brest, France, and for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra summer concert series. He has recorded two CDs of cornet and piano repertoire and, for Osaka College of Music, all 12 Arban “Celebrated Solos” in the Goldman edition.

Daniel is a graduate of Laval University, in Quebec city, and the Montreal Conservatory of Music. He also holds a Doctorate Degree in trumpet performance from the University of Montreal for his work and research on the “baroque” trumpet and 19th century cornet repertoire.

Dr. Doyon is presently on sabbatical leave from his position as “invited professor” at Osaka College of Music where, since 1986, he has taught trumpet performance, trumpet ensembles, symphonic brass ensemble and chamber music for brass, as well as his position as lecturer at the Takamatsu Junior College. He has served on many audition and competition jurys and has completed a series of 14 articles for the Japanese wind instrument monthly “PIPERS”.

Daniel Doyon plays exclusively on YAMAHA instruments and mouthpieces.

Soliste, récitaliste et chambriste, le trompettiste Daniel DOYON est fondateur de l'Ensemble de Cuivres de Montréal et membre du Japan Gabrieli Brass Quartet. Il est souvent appelé à se produire en récital, ou comme soliste avec divers orchestres et ensembles, au Japon principalement. Il a été soliste invité et conférencier à l'Université des Beaux-Arts de Tokyo, au Festival national du Japan Trumpet Association ainsi qu'au Yamaha International Trumpet Seminar à Nému-no-Sato, soliste aux concerts d'été de l'Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, soliste également avec le Slovak Phil Chamber Orchestra, la Musique des Équipages de la Flotte de Brest (France), de même que l'Orchestre et l'Harmonie de la Garde Républicaine de Paris. Il a enregistré à date deux DCs d'oeuvres originales pour cornet à pistons et piano.

Natif de Sherbrooke, Québec, Daniel DOYON est diplômé de l¹Université Laval et détient des Premiers Prix de trompette et de musique de chambre du Conservatoire de Montréal ainsi qu¹on Doctorat en musique de l¹Université de Montréal.

Professeur invité au Collège de musique d'Osaka depuis 1986, titulaire des classes de trompette et de musique de chambre pour cuivres, il enseigne également au Collège de Takamatsu et participe fréquemment à des jurys de concours ou d'audition. Il collabore régulièrement à la rédaction de la revue japonaise “PIPERS”.

Marie-Josée Simard

Marie-Josée Simard is one of Canada's outstanding percussionists. For the past 14 years she has performed with various musical groups including the Montreal Symphony, Edmonton Symphony, Toronto Symphony and Winnipeg Symphony as well as Montreal's Orchestre Metropolitain, the Cociete de Musique Contemporaire, Ensemble I Musici de Montreal and Violons du Roy. Marie has appeared on a number of recordings and is often heard on CBC. Composers that have written compositions specifically for Marie include Clermont Pepin, Pierre Max Dubois, Dennis Gougeon and Serge Arcuri to name a few.
