Auditions for the National Youth Band of Canada are usually due in November, and are done via audition tapes. Taped auditions should be recorded on a new cassette tape or a CD, with auditions not to exceed five minutes. A copy of the material performed should be included.

The tape should include

• chromatic scale
• concert major scales (F and Ab) - two octaves
• arpeggios in 8th notes (alternating slurring and tonguing) - two octaves
• two short excerpts of solos or etudes unaccompanied

Percussionists must perform on snare drum, timpani, and mallets unaccompanied.

To be eligible for the National Youth Band, students must be 16 to 21 years of age as of January 1 in the year the band performs.
