In 1996, the National Youth Band of Canada met in Toronto from May 18 to 24 in conjunction with MusicFest Canada. The band put in long hours of practice every day, rehearsing at McMaster campus in Hamilton. The band was under the guidance of James Hargreaves. The band played a concert at Westmount Secondary School in Hamilton, Ontario to a receptive audience of students. During the week of rehearsals, the band managed to take some time out to travel to Niagara Falls, before playing two sold-out shows at MusicFest Canada on May 23.
