CBA Festival
Repertoire List
Compiled by
Jacquie Dawson and Karem Simon
Preface
For the 2005 edition of the
CBA Festival Repertoire List, wind-band directors in all provinces were
contacted to participate in this project.
Sixteen of them made submissions for the list. This revision of the list involved band directors working at every grade level, from
middle school through to college and university. Guidelines were
distributed to all contributors.
There were hundreds of
titles recommended for the list.
In arriving at a consensus, we sought to maintain a balance of
traditional, contemporary, lyrical, and technical pieces within each grade
level, while seeking a diverse representation of styles, composers, and
nationalities. As a result, the
list of pieces at each grade level has expanded from fifteen to twenty
selections.
In addition, we
attempted to increase the Canadian content of the list. Unfortunately,
recommendations of Canadian works were limited, particularly for the lower
grades. We recognize that a wealth
of Canadian repertoire exists that needs to be more widely known. The
list that follows is another step toward that end.
This list is the result of
deliberations that were plentiful, fair, balanced, and inclusive. As co-ordinators, we realize that a
different committee may have arrived at different conclusions; this speaks to
the abundance of quality repertoire available in our genre. We hope that CBA members will explore
and value this revised list.
Through dialogue and a progressive approach to repertoire building, we
look forward to strengthening our Festival Repertoire List in the future.
Respectfully Submitted,
Jacquie Dawson & Karem J.
Simon
