2010
The National Youth Band of Canada (NYB) is the Canadian Band Association's flagship project. The CBA was formed in 1934 to "promote and develop the musical, educational and cultural values of band music in Canada." In 1978, 1991, and annually since 1994, the National Youth Band of Canada has offered an unparalleled musical opportunity for outstanding Canadian instrumentalists, woodwind, brass and percussion, between the ages of 16 and 21.
Martin Boundy, Dr. Dennis Prime, Bramwell Tovey, André Jutras, James Hargreaves, Stéphane LaForest, Bobby Herriot, Dr. Gerald King, Dr. Glenn Price, Dr. Gillian MacKay, Dr. Tania Miller, Alain Cazes, Dr. Denise Grant, Marvin Eckroth, Dr. Fraser Linklater, Dr. Karem Simon, Colin Clarke, and Dr. Shelley Jagow are all accomplished Canadian musicians and conductors who have brought outstanding artistry and musicianship to the NYB podium.
Acting as Music Director for the 2010 National Youth Band of Canada is Dr. Wayne Jeffrey, Director of Ensembles at Kwantlen University College Department of Music.
Each year Yamaha Canada provides a guest artist to perform with the NYB. jThis year Ian McDougall, trombone is the guest artist.
Canadian Band Association’s Flag Ship Project
goes west! The band will rehearse and perform in BC in 2010.

National Youth Band of Canada 2010 Conductor
Dr. Wayne Jeffrey
Dr. Wayne Jeffrey is presently Director of Ensembles of the Kwantlen University College Department of Music. He has previously held positions at the Universities of Western Ontario, Toronto and Cincinnati and was the Music Director of the Wind Symphony and Conducting Instructor in each school. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting and music education from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York and has appeared as an Associate Conductor of the Eastman Wind Ensemble on many concerts. In Europe, he studied and performed in London, Munich, Budapest, Salzburg and Vienna. As a hornist and conductor, he has broadcast and performed in Canada and abroad and has recorded with the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Toronto Chamber Winds, the Hannaford Street Silver Band, CJRT Orchestra and the Erik Schultz Brass Quintet. Orchestral and chamber performances occur across Canada including Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Windsor, London, Hamilton, Toronto, Kingston, Montreal and Fredericton, He appears frequently as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator at festivals throughout North America and Europe.
Presently located in the Vancouver area, he performs as a freelance hornist regularly with orchestras on Vancouver Island and throughout the lower Mainland including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Sinfonia: Orchestra of the North Shore. Recent guest conducting appearances include the Toronto Wind Orchestra, the Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra, the Surrey Youth Orchestra and the Irish Youth Wind Ensemble.

Ian McDougall, Trombone
Canadian trombonist Ian McDougall is perhaps best known for his work with Rob McConnell's Boss Brass – Ian was lead trombone and soloist for twenty years. He was also a founding member, soloist, lead trombone, and arranger for the Brass Connection. His compositions and arrangements in both jazz and classical idioms are performed internationally. Ian now resides in Victoria, BC, where he performs regularly with his quartet and sextet, and is also busy teaching and writing.
Ian now resides in Victoria, where he continues to play, compose, and teach. He taught trombone, composition, and jazz studies at the University of Victoria, leaving there in 2003 as Professor Emeritus. Ian was awarded the University of Victoria's "Distinguished Alumni" award in 2004. The past decade has included tours in Canada and abroad, both as a soloist and with his groups, to Ireland, Scotland, Australia, Denmark, Holland, the USA, Germany, and England, where Ian was music director for two BBC Big Band broadcasts.
Over the years, Ian has been invited to be a performer and clinician at three International Trombone Association conventions, in Nashville, Rochester, and in Las Vegas. Also, in the past decade, Ian has been featured as leader on six CDs. His latest double CD is entitled "In a Sentimental Mood," and features the music of Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington with Ian joined by his quartet.
